Feeding Hummingbirds: What They Eat and Need

Hummingbirds primarily feed on nectar from flowers, which provides them with essential sugars for energy.

You can easily make a safe nectar solution by mixing 1 part white granulated sugar with 4 parts water.

In addition to nectar, hummingbirds need protein for growth and repair. They catch small insects and spiders, such as gnats, fruit flies

Due to their high metabolism, hummingbirds must feed frequently, visiting hundreds of flowers or feeders daily.

Hummingbirds are known for their rapid, darting movements as they feed. They hover in front of flowers or feeders

If you use hummingbird feeders, clean them regularly—about every 3-5 days in warm weather—to prevent mold and bacteria,

Hummingbirds also need water for bathing and hydration. Shallow birdbaths, misters, or fountains can attract them.

In regions where hummingbirds stay year-round, such as with Anna’s Hummingbird, providing feeders during cooler months is essential.
